Looking to stretch your vocabulary and sharpen your wits? The New York Times’ daily word game, Connections, continues to captivate puzzle lovers across the globe. Launched during its beta phase on June 12, 2023, the game quickly rose in popularity—and is now the second-most-played NYT game, just behind Wordle.
Connections challenges players to sort 16 seemingly unrelated words into four hidden groups based on a shared theme. It's more than just a fun distraction—it's a daily brain exercise that blends logic, language, and pattern recognition.
What Is NYT Connections?
Connections is a word puzzle designed by Wyna Liu, Associate Puzzle Editor at The New York Times. Each puzzle presents a grid of 16 words. Your task: find the links and organize the words into four sets of four, each connected by a common category. These connections may be based on meaning, common usage, pop culture references, or clever wordplay.
To make the game accessible to a wide audience, it features three difficulty levels: Easy, Medium, and Hard. Players can track their performance, share results, and even compare solutions across social platforms like X (formerly Twitter), where the game has a growing, enthusiastic following.
How to Play
You’ll receive a new puzzle every day at midnight. Available via the New York Times website or app, each puzzle offers a grid of 16 words. Your goal is to group the words into four sets of four based on a shared connection. Categories can range from “types of fruit” to “names that begin with ‘The’ in pop culture.”
Each group is color-coded by difficulty:
- Yellow – Usually the easiest to spot.
- Green and Blue – Moderate difficulty.
- Purple – Often the trickiest, relying on puns or abstract links.
You have four chances to make mistakes. A helpful prompt may appear if you're one word away from a correct grouping, but you’ll need to figure out which one to swap. Once you've grouped all words correctly—or used up your chances—the puzzle ends.
